Mission Statement

The UC Law SF Center on Tax Law connects students, faculty, alumni, and friends who study, discuss, practice, and seek to improve tax law. In addition to sponsoring on-campus presentations by both academics and practitioners, members of our tax faculty are frequent contributors to both academic journals and real-time, current events in taxation. The Center also develops relationships between current and former students, potential employers, and the community. If you are interested in participating in the Center’s activities, please let us know.

History

The Center was launched in the spring of 2018 to formalize the important role tax law has played at UC Law SF. Tax law was introduced into the UC Law SF curriculum more than eighty years ago. UC Law SF increased its commitment to preparing students for careers in tax law approximately four decades ago, when UC Law SF hired four faculty members, now our emeriti, to expand UC Law SF’s tax curriculum and make tax law a core strength of UC Law SF. In 1996, building on the tax program’s strength, UC Law SF founded a concentration in tax law that prescribes a rigorous course of study for JD students interested in tax law. Students who successfully complete the required tax concentration coursework earn a certificate in recognition of the expertise they have developed.

Tax faculty members at UC Law SF have taught thousands of students over the years, including more than 300 who earned the tax concentration certificate since the concentration’s founding. As a result, our tax alumni practice across the country and around the world, and include partners at major law and accounting firms, in-house counsels at numerous companies, tax law professors, and government lawyers and judges specializing in tax matters. Each year, we are proud to see another group of tax concentrators graduate and enter the tax profession.

Today, our full-time tax faculty members build on the strengths of the past and continue to revise and expand the curriculum to respond to the needs of today’s tax law students and to prepare students for the future of tax practice. We are assisted by adjunct faculty members, who are leading tax practitioners in the Bay Area and the Northwest, and our emeritus tax faculty members, who include a nationally-known expert on the tax and financial aspects of conservation transactions, and authors and co-authors of leading casebooks and treatises on individual, corporate, partnership, estate/gift, and nonprofit taxation.

The Tax Center recognizes and centralizes all of our curricular, teaching, advising, programmatic, and scholarly efforts, and provides opportunities for connecting students, faculty, alumni, and friends who are interested in tax law. We are grateful for the support of the UC Law SF administration, our colleagues, and our generous tax alumni who are invested in helping to launch the next generation of tax practitioners.
